Links to Cat Foods
First, let us state that we are not veterinarians nor are we trained on nutrition. However, we have done much reading and research, and it is all common sense. Natural is healthy. We have no reason to "push" these foods, except that we want our pets to be healthy. We do not get any kickbacks or cuts or anything of the sort on any of this food. In fact, we don't even get a discount! Some of these foods are fairly expensive, but you see the result in your cat - in his fur, his activity level, and over a lifetime, in his vet bills. In an informal survey of people who have owned cats before, we find that almost everyone who mentions that their cat died of kidney or liver failure, fed dry food only. The people who had cats living for 18 and 20 years fed wet food almost exclusively. A veterinary conference this past year also reported findings that wet food is a better diet than dry, and contributes to the overall health of the cat.
All of the information we have received on food has come from books listed in our "Reading Material" link, and in issues of the original Whole Cat Journal (which is no longer published). All of the foods we list are natural, high-quality foods containing no by-products, no "meal" and no artificial preservatives. Additionally, we recommend supplements such as Anitra's Vita-Mineral Mix, made by Halo; Missing Link food supplement; and Prozyme. Wysong has many great supplements, and we are always learning more!
- Active Life
- A higher-priced food, in eight different flavors! The cats LOVE this food. When you read the ingredients, though, many of the flavors are identical. I think that the difference is only that some have chunks of meat, and others are puree; but who cares, the cats adore it!
- Evolve
- Very popular with the kitties! Three flavors - Chicken, Turkey and Seafood. There is also a kitten formula. Chunks of vegetables!
- Felidae
- Two flavors of wet food. Human grade ingredients!
- Halo
- Makers of Spot's Stew. Has whole vegetables, meat chunks - really is stew! Also makes Anitra's Vita-Mineral Mix, which we have used to cure upper respiratory infections and ringworm. They make other great treats and supplements also!
- Lick Your Chops
- We have just started using this, but kitties seem to like it so far!
- Merrick
- Tons of delicious flavors with fun names like Grandma's Pot Pie, California Roll and Turducken. Real chunks of meat, which the cats really love.
- Natura
- Makers of Innova and California Natural - both great foods that we use. Innova seems to be good for cats whose digestive systems have a harder time adapting to new foods.
- Natural Balance
- Made by Dick Van Patten. Comes in three flavors, and one hairball management variety.
- Newman's Own Organics
- Wet and dry foods, made from organic and free-range ingredients.
- Nutro
- Makes MaxCat, MaxKitten and Natural Choice products. The Natural Choice pouches and the Classic Gourmet cans are both really popular choices with the cats, even for cats who are picky or not feeling well. This is also one of the most commercially available foods we recommend, as it can be found at PetSmart, Petco, etc. They also have a new line of cat treats!
- Petguard
- Excellent foods and supplements, and at a decent price (best we have found is at Whole Foods.). Good variety of flavors. Cats LOVE it!
- Wellness
- With three new flavors, for a grand total of EIGHT, Wellness makes excellent quality foods with human grade ingredients. Wellness is made by Old Mother Hubbard, but make sure you get the Wellness line, as it is the higher quality one.
- Wysong
- Amazing feeding information and philosophy. Wysong offers products for both humans and animals. You will probably not find more un-biased information as far as feeding philosophy. The closest thing to a raw-diet that you can get in a can. 6 "meat only" varieties, 3 "gourmet" varieties, tons of great supplements, and our FAVORITE Wysong Cat Treats, which kitties go CRAZY for!!!
